Mercari is the marketplace app that makes it easy for anyone to buy and sell goods. Originally launched in Japan in 2013, Mercari rapidly achieved success in its home market before expanding to the US in 2014 and to the UK in early 2017.
Marketplace is a very competitive market in the UK, on one side we have the tech giants: Ebay, Facebook, Gumtree. On the other side we have Shpock, Vinted, Etsy, Depop… those new marketplace apps that are already established in the market. How we can differentiate ourselves from the competitors? How can we improve the bespoke product from Japan? How can we help our users to buy and sell online?
We did the user research, run a few productive workshops with Mercari team, identified the problem, and what success meant to stakeholders and the users. Base on the hypothesis, we generated and produced a bunch of ideas, testing prototypes and released many new features. Our team also created the design system from scratch, commissioned with the branding agency KOTO, introduced the new and refreshing branding to our app. We came up with the new feature “Instant Selling”, which increased the items inventories and speeded up the selling process and significantly improved the selling experiences.
Our user can list items for sale in under 40 seconds for free straight from their phone. Add a simple description, set the price and start selling instantly. The shoppers can ask sellers questions directly through our private chat function.
